4 Must-Read Bios & Memoirs Written by Black Women

“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are” – Mason Cooley

Growing up, my father enforced reading in our home. We would go to the library every weekend and spend hours getting lost in books. We were that family who would not return books to the library and have to pay for them. My father showed me that reading is essential, and I have carried on the habit of reading into adulthood. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, “5 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health and Manage Stress 2020,” reading is also one of my favourite ways to distress, as I already love it so much.

Over the past two years, I have dived into different memoirs and biographies by black women in various industries. Here are my top four:

Elaine Welteroth, More Than Enough

Elaine Welteroth’s story More Than Enough has to be one of my most inspiring reads. The title of the book itself is compelling and speaks volumes for women of colour. Elaine takes us on this amazing journey, as she becomes the Editor- In- Chief at Teen Vogue at the age of 29. The second African American at Conde Nast to hold that title. All the while she was having impactful discussions on race, relationships, identity and self-doubt amongst us as black women. It was indeed a fantastic read and highly recommended.

Gabrielle Union, We’re Going to Need More Wine

I have always loved Gabrielle Union. I still watch Bring it On and Deliver Us from Eva like they came out yesterday. She wrote her story with a lot of realness, unpacking her truth and sharing her bravery with us. Gabrielle’s story is inspiring and a must-read. She allows us into her world and shares a remarkable story of the various challenges that most thought would break her, but they never did.

Shonda Rhimes, Year of Yes

Shonda Rhimes is the mastermind behind my favourite television show Grey’s Anatomy. She is also the creator of another show I loved, How to Get Away with Murder. Year of Yes was a great read. Shonda’s sisters challenge her to say yes for one year, and her book takes you on that powerful one-year journey. She said yes to new opportunities, stepping outside of her comfort zone, and she said yes to change. She shares with us the impact saying yes has had on her life and how it can impact yours.

Michelle Obama, Becoming

Becoming is a phenomenal read by the former first lady of the United States. I first purchased the audible version, because it was read so beautifully in her voice. Then I bought the hardcopy because I needed it on my bookshelf. In Becoming, Michelle takes us on her journey to becoming a woman, a mother, a wife and the first lady of the United States. She openly shares such a heartwarming story of finding her voice. Michelle’s story is authentic, filled with inspiring accomplishments and life lessons. She has created an empowering platform that advocates for young women and pushes for families to live healthier lives. Michelle also navigates us through her journey before and during her time in the white house. Great read!

“For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.” – Michelle Obama
